Rammed Earth - under constructionEarth
Many of the Earthbuilders projects have involved the use of Earth Wall Construction, and consequently, they have developed a level of expertise and experience unmatched in the region.

There are two basic types of Earth Constructions, Post & Beam and Load Bearing. Both methods;

  • can be achieved with a variety of floor and roof types
  • have unique features
  • are applicable to the modern era of earth building



    • Post & Beam - under construction - Barnawatha, Vic.Post & Beam

  • Involves the construction of framework to carry the imposed load of the roof, simultaneously providing for the holding down of the roof against wind uplift.
  • Allows for the erection of the roof, and therefore shelter, relatively quickly.
  • Provides opportunities for the use of large section timber posts as a design feature.
  • Can be achieved using concealed steel posts to reduce cost.
  • Usually involves the use of Mudbrick, not Rammed Earth.


    Load Bearing Mudbrick - under constructionLoad Bearing

  • Allows for the roof to be placed directly on the Earth walls without the need for vertical supports as in Post & Beam construction. This has been the traditional method of Earth construction in an historical sense.
  • Provides for wall lines uninterrupted by structural members
  • Removes the expense of large section timber posts & beams
  • Suitable for both Mudbrick and Rammed Earth


    Post & Beam Mudbrick - Oxley, Vic.Alternative Construction
